Abstract: This thesis deals with the treatment of biologically induced formations of calcareous surface accretions and stone (tufa) from a restorer’s point of view. It centres on the eastern Naiad Fountain, built in 1870, situated in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna which contains a sculpture made of Sterzing marble. Besides research concerning the history of the object and a condition report, the biological weathering is described here in detail. Light and electron microscopy provide revealing results about the structure and composition of the encrustations, tufa, and the inhibiting microorganisms which are responsible for the precipitation. Based on sample areas an appropriate conservation concept is developed. Additionally a maintenance concept to prevent future biological growth and the formation of encrustations is proposed.
