Overview:

Abstract: A mystery surrounds the construction date of the twin tower structure of the church at Maria Saal: uncommon for the Late Gothic period, they are also constructed differently. The results of the first analysis of the natural stones used, the masonry technique and the architectural surfaces significantly contribute to the building’s history. Besides the visible stone-layered masonry, these findings also represent façade sections with medieval plaster mortar. The damage assessment and condition analysis of the building structure reveal a loss of plaster, desolate horizontal architectural elements in alarming condition and building material damaged by fire. The aim of this thesis is to develop an appropriate as well as efficient conservation concept for the exterior façade which is partly stone-layered and partly plastered. The practical implementation is realized exemplarily based on a selected sample area.
