Abstract: The severely damaged large-sized Baroque oil painting on canvas which, since the 19th century has been titled "St. Jerome“ requires extensive conservation which is accompanied by scientific and ray-diagnostic investigations. The practical work was focused on closing numerous tears in the canvas, consolidation of the paint layer and the removal of old fillings. The eventful history of the painting’s conservation and presentation in the Imperial gallery is researched. Important information was provided by the Storffer inventory of 1730 and a glue-paste-lining signed in 1774 by Joseph Hickel. In the course of the work the depiction is identified as the Byzantine general Belisarius and the painting received a new attribution to the Italian painter Gian Domenico Cerrini (1609-1681).
