Overview:

Abstract: The late Gothic triptych, tempera on coniferous wood, 68 x 72 x 2.8 cm, named after the depiction of the apostles on the main panel, is in the collection of the Landesmuseum Joanneum. The altarpiece’s original location is unknown, the date is assumed to be around 1490. A specific conservation problem of the largely original work is the firmly-adhering fatty layers of grime and extensive deposits of animal faeces. Their removal is based on a series of tests of different mechanical and aqueous methods which also aim to preserve the original varnish. Later overpainting will be partly removed, partially toned-down by retouching and visually-integrated into the original substance. Art-historical research treats the triptych’s origins in the border region of Carinthia/Styria/Slovenia, new comparisons from Carinthia and Styria are presented.
