Overview:

Abstract: This thesis adresses the topic of historical letter folding in German speaking territories of the 14th and 15th century. The goal is to analyse the letter folding techniques and focus on it as a separate medium of historical information. Historical letters from the municipal archive of Hildesheim are the basis of the analysis. Those letters will be evaluated with regards to the following characteristics: material, format and technical development. Selected folding techniques will be presented with a historical example and a description. Visuell instructions make it possible
to reconstruct the letter folding and can be used as a basic for documentation. The necessity of conserving historical folding techniques will be discussed and recommendations of conservation methods will be given.
