Abstract: Abstract
The idea and topic of this master thesis were realized in cooperation with the Cabinet of Prints, Drawings and Photographs of the Dresden State Art Collections. The subject of this thesis is a series of Anton Graff’s small-format portrait sketches, which are to be examined with regard to material and art technology from a conservation and restoration point of view. Based on the question of the artistic technique and its connection to Graff’s work, an extensive inventory appraisal of these portrait sketches is conducted. By means of material analysis and scientific art research, the artistic developmental process as well as the function and classification of the series of works can be described. Lastly, by request of the Cabinet of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, a proposal is presented for a new concept for the conservation and storage of the portrait sketches which meets today’s demands with regard to conservation and restoration, museum standards and the guidelines of the Cabinet of Prints, Drawings and Photographs.
