Vera Gremme: Planning the systematical research of retreatments for tear mendings on paper Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This thesis develops the essentials of the possibility to treat tear mendings done with wheat starch paste on paper objects. Students of HAWK practice the method of tear mending with the aid of a didactical instruction sheet. It represents the framework for the test papers and the experiments, which will be developed by this thesis to investigate the possibilities and limits of a retreatment. The necessity to retreat a tear mending is based on the principle of reversibility for treatments in restauration and conservation, to protect objects from damage that can develop during the processes of ageing or derives from newly implemented material and incorrect treatment.
This thesis also examines the conventional usage of the words “reversibility” and “retreatment” in conservation literature. It observes the processes of adherence and solving with detailed look at the usage of wheat starch paste. Based on these insights and the developed experimental assembly advices for systematic solving approaches will be given.
