Anne Manthey: Concerning the standardization of conservation and restoration methods by the example of the Hildesheim Diocese archive’s collection of Church books Back

Overview:
Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to develop viable options for standardized conservation and restoration methods by using the example of a collection of church records in order to give precise recommendations.
For this purpose and to develop priorities in the definition of objectives, the objects’ intrinsic value as well as the frame giving ethical considerations will be addressed first. This is followed by a closer examination of the collection focusing on its conservation status, characteristics and types of damage and the investigation of accompanying factors. The findings gained this way are further complemented by an exemplary restoration of two objects from the collection.
As a result, a division of the topic standardization in variable and constant factors is proposed. This way of structuring enables a differentiated view on the accompanying aspects and emphasizes that the setting of objectives needs to be defined as frame giving, whereas the applied work methods as such should stay variable in order to allow for the necessary flexibility demanded by unique and thus irreplaceable objects.
