Abstract: In the past there has always been dramatic damage to archives, museums, and libraries. Oftentimes the effects of war, fire, or flood are responsible for this damage. Due to a lack of resources, many archives and libraries still have materials even today whose use due to fire and water damage from World War II is limited.
A particular type of damage found is sludge deposition, often caused by flood. With the help of a sample inventory from the Lower Saxony State Archives, which was severely damaged by flooding of the Leine River in 1946, different types of damage can be identified. Depending on the composition of the deposits, harmful aspects for users and staff cannot be ruled out and need to be considered. Being sought is an efficient and effective method to reduce or remove such deposits. In this basic research, with help from literary sources, the causes of deposits as well as the possible methods of removal/reduction are described, their advantages and disadvantages discussed, and recommendations made.
