Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: As a result of the collapse of the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne on March 3, 2009, the total
holding of its archival records was damaged. In addition to intact and damaged archivals, innumerable
fragments were recovered. The task to digitally and physically reconstruct the fragmented archivals arises
as well from the statutory duty as from the responsibility towards the loans, bequests and socalled
premortem bequests. The conservation of the fragments requires the application of a suitable
massprocedure. Methods considered here include separating of the bone-chip blockings, as well as drycleaning
and smoothing of the fragments. The examination of different manual and physical methods
intends to contribute essentially to the solution of the difficulties encountered in this process.
