Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The polychrome wooden relief, “The Temptation of Saint Anthony”, which was acquired in the 1920’s by the
Schütgen Museum, Cologne, was basically examined iconographically, stylistically as well as arttechnologically.
No information was available other than the notes that were to be found in the museum
inventory-book. According to the notes this late-gothic object had its origin in southern Germany. In order
to classify the object art-historically more accurately, it underwent further iconographic and stylistic
examination. During technical examination the condition of the object as well as the damages and factors
causing these damages were documented. What was particularly noticeable was the very damaged
condition of the paint layers and the very unstable condition of the support materials. Based on the results
of the investigation it was possible to formulate a conservation/restoration treatment proposal. The
conservation and partial restoration treatment were then carried out in accordance with this plan.
