| Abstract: | This thesis deals with the description and assessment of the condition of the vault paintings of the Kapitelsaal (chapter house) of the former Benedictine abbey Brauweiler from the mid-12th century. The monumental paintings can be well classified according to the tradition of the „weichen, fließenden Stil“ (soft floating stile), a stile which was quite common in the region around Cologne at that time. In 1863 the Kapitelsaal and the adjacent Benediktuskapelle were combined to form an architectural entity. In this paper informations regarding the historical construction of the groined vaults are explored in detail to provide a better understanding of the overall structural context. In addition the views of each single wall surface were transferred in digital mapping to capture the present situation. The unrendered lower area of the walls allows an allocation of verifiable alterations. The basic situation and condition of the fragmentary wall paintings, including mortar- and salt analysis, are recorded in a glossary in the form of a foto documentation. Ethical and esthetic aspects with regard to the presentation and interior have been discussed in interviews on site with people of different local stakeholders . The content of this thesis includes general historical background information. The focus of this thesis is the development of a conservation and restoration concept in order to guarantee the preservation of the historical substance. |
