Sophie Philipp: Linography: Technique between Painting and Photography: manufacturing process, reconstruction and ana-lyze Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Linographs, also known as over-painted photographs upon canvas, were introduced in the 19th century.
Although photography was the new reproduction technology then, people still appreciated paintings. By
over-painting photographs with traditional techniques artists were able to combine both genres. Since
Linographs were hardly researched before, the purpose of this thesis is to further investigate the technique.
The first part focuses on what constitutes Linography and how the term was used. By examining the
manufacturing process of Linographs in the 19th century, it was possible to analyze their structure and to
reconstruct over-painted photographs upon canvas.
