Overview:

Abstract: The present study is concerned with the conservation and restoration of a separated panel painting with cross battens from a previous intervention. Discussed are the scientific examination of the panel construction and painting materials, changes to the panel as a result of previous interventions and condition recording.
In light of the damage caused by the cross battens the focus is on the treatment of the wooden painting support. The following interventions were carried out: removal of the cross battens, glueing of cracks, structural stabilization of the panel. Finally, taking into consideration the present condition and the reconstruction of the readability of the scene, dot retouching was applied in areas of loss.
At the center of the theoretical part is the documentation of panel paintings kept at the Salzburg Museum, Austria, which had cross battens applied in the past and the long-term damage caused by this intervention. The scientific examination of 34 panel paintings, a study of the archives combined with information provided by staff past and present allow to make a contribution to the restoration history of the SMCA, Austria.
