Abstract: The epitaph of Konrad Gehe from 1671 in Merseburg Cathedral is the topic of this diploma thesis. The central panel painting “The Raising of Lazarus” and the elaborate carvings of the frame were examined in view of art technological questions and damage assessment. The insights were compiled in a written documentation with photographs. The development of a treatment concept for conservation and restoration of the frame followed,conservation had priority due to the alarming condition of its polychromy.It was also necessary to establish a conservation and restoration concept for the panel painting.The execution of the planned measures was carried out in the practical part of this thesis with special attention being paid to the seriously damaged paint layers.
