Abstract: The subject of this final paper (diploma paper) is the painting „Pifferari vor einem Madonnenbild betend“ („Pifferari Praying in Front of an Image of the Madonna“), 1843, by Johann Grund from the collection of the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg) .
The main issue was the mending of a tear with multiple branches, the theoretical section of the work focuses on the possibilities and difficulties of tear-mending in the case of a twill weave fabric.
Another point of discussion was the varnish,, which had been removed from one fifth of the painting., and whether or not to do a varnish retouch.
