Patricia Schering: The panel painting Kalvarienbery by Hermann tom Ring - Technical examination and restauration Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: The investigation and restoration of the wooden panel painting Kalvarienberg from the ‘LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur’, painted around 1550 by Hermann tom Ring, is the focus of this master thesis. The technical examination of the panel painting offered exciting insights, especially through the complex shape of the joints, the thinly layered painted surface and the original blue colour in this work. The framing of the panel with rigid cross bars in a frame with a circumferential groove has contributed to the opening of the joints. Thus, the focus of the practical part was on the stabilization of the support by re-gluing and re-framing in accordance with a historical example. In addition, a concept for the exposure and restoration of the heavily plastered and overpainted pictoral layer is presented, the suitability of which has been confirmed based on sample surfaces.
