Sonja Radujkovic: Preservation of polychrome glazes on terracotta - Preparation and weathering of model samples and investigations for conservation Back

Overview:

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare different materials for consolidation and coating of glazed terracotta.
The study was carried out by analysing a polychrome glazed terracotta medallion from the 16th century in Lüneburg. Model-samples were produced to simulate the damages of the original by artifical weathering.
After the model-samples were stabilized and coated, they were exposed to another stress cycle in a climate chamber.
The analysis compared the different materials and methods which were used concerning the adhesion of the glaze (pulling off an adhesive strip), hydrophobicity (waterdrop-test) and possible damages caused by corrosion (light microscopy; scanning electron microscopy). None of the materials examined in this study (organic and inorganic polymers, heteropolysiloxanes) can be recommended for the conservation of glazed terracotta without further optimization. However, the conservation strategy developed in this work (consolidation, fixation, coating) offers valuable starting points for further studies.
