Overview:

Abstract: Since 2011 the MAK Vienna possesses a donation from the contemporary Austrian fashion designer Helmut Lang. Numerous models of clothing are affected by fire damage which have been suffering by smell of burning apart from traces of fire and smoke since. The conservation treatment has been focused mainly on the reduction of the fire traces and the smell load as well, besides a collection analysis. Starting from the challenge of conserving textiles damaged by fire, methods of proper treatment have been demonstrated and
applied on well selected samples. Based on a scientific analysis, methods of reducing the smell of smoke have been developed using a special airflow chamber. Using the results of the investigations recommendations are given for cleaning with conservation methods of fire damaged textiles.
