Kristina Oeser: Evaluation of methods of tear-closure as a basis for handling engravings on silk Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The SUB Göttingen owns a sermon released in 1698, which is fitted with six engravings on silk. The silk sheets are damaged by tears. The aim of this thesis is to develop an approach to treat the silk sheets according to preservational and conservational standards by using scientific literature and evaluating conditional photographies of the silk sheets.
Bas van Velzen defined different criterias for tears to occur in paper. By analysing the condition of the silk sheets and aging characteristics of silk it can be shown, that fold tears, incompatibility tears and tears comprising degradation and distortion can occur in silk fabric, too. Nevertheless, further research is need to be done.
Fabric restorers use sewing methods or adhesives to stabilize damaged fabrics. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are described. The condition of the silk sheets allows a stabilization based on sewing methods. According to ethical and preservational guidelines, a conception of treating and storing is finally created.
