Overview:

Abstract: This master´s thesis deals with two late gothic and polychrome bishop´s
sculptures. They were created around 1525 and are attributed to the so-called
Benedict Master. After many years of private ownership, they were acquired by
the Dommuseum and the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim in
2019, which gave reason for the present master thesis.
The provenance as well as the object history of the two sculptures are
summarized on the basis of the information available to date. The associated
revisions to the support and setting are traced and described. With the help of
various analytical methods, art-technological examinations of the sculptures will
be carried out. The question of remnants of older frames and a former wood
vision is investigated. Based on the resulting technical and technical findings, an
art-historical classification is made and the original function of both figures is
considered. In addition, the state of preservation of both sculptures is briefly
recorded and appropriate recommendations are made.
