Kaja Schönfelder: Considerations on ivory and ivory substitute materials under aspects of conservation and restoration Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: For centuries Ivory has held a special fascination for people. A kind of dangerous procurement, the colour from cool white to a warm yellowish tone, the finger feeling for the piano player, the contrast for the furniture or musical instrument maker are exemplary reasons for this. For the elephants led the fascination for the material to decades of ruthless exploitation.
In the ancient time first attempts were made to imitate ivory. Today this is still the concern of researchers and scientists. An abundance of substitutes is available on the free market, but none of them seems to gain acceptance and offer the real ivory a worthy alternative.
This work deals with ivory as a material. It describes the history of and the reasons for substitute materials. And a selection of substitutes where made in order to examine them for their suitability as a substitute for Ivory.
