Lea Bitterwolf: The photo album of Marie Therese Hagen in the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv in Weimar - Cultural and historical, conservational and conservation ethical thoughts Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Archives and other institutions that are entrusted with the preservation of cultural property are often faced with two questions: Should this object be kept and, if so, how big
can the effort be to make it possible to preserve it? In this work, these questions are
investigated using Marie Therese Hagen´s photo album. The focus of the observation
is, in contrast to research so far, on the photo album as the original form of transmission
of the portrait photographs it contains. The aim is to make it clear that the benefit resulting from the preservation of this object justifies its preservation. For this purpose,
(cultural) historical, technical, conservational and restoration ethical aspects were examined. Two different methods were used. On one hand the object itself was examined.
On the other hand the instruments of literature and source research were used to supplement and interpret the investigations on the object.
