Overview:

Abstract: The "Antwerp Passion Altar" in the Vienna Votivchurch is a masterpiece of Old Netherlandish
art production and one of the most important examples of well-preserved retables with original
polychromy. In addition to the art historical research, which discusses the different guild marks
and the original masterpiece, this diploma thesis is dedicated to a review of its conservation
history and the detailed documentation of changes, that have characterised the conserved
appearance. Based on physical and condition surveys a concept for its conservation is
developed and then practically applied. The focus lays on conservation measures. Additional
interventions serve to restore a well-cared appearance in view of the renewed exhibition in the
museum of the Vienna Votivchurch.
