Abstract: Marouflage, the transfer of a canvas painting onto a rigid support, is a technique of paintings conservation, which nowadays contradicts the ethical
code of conservators. Since the 1960s it usually is not applied anymore because of the many damages it can cause in the short- and long-term. From the 18th to the early 20th century though, it was commonly used, which is why museums still hold paintings with sufficient damages from marouflage. This thesis documents which damages possibly occur and how they could be treated. This is done by literature research and the case study of a painting by Carl Oesterley from the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover.
