Abstract: This bachelor thesis gives an overview of some important active substances and methods for
the control of insect pests in museum collections in the 20th century. The known insecticides
are assigned to their substance groups and application periods, application types and human
toxicity are described. Based on an archive evaluation at the GRASSI Ethnological Museum in
Leipzig (GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde in Leipzig), the insecticides used there during the
20th century are presented chronologically. In the following, the distribution of insecticides
within museum collections will be discussed and the present-day effects of past insecticide
treatments in the form of potentially caused damage to objects and the health hazards for conservators and depot staff resulting from insecticide treatments will be described
