Abstract: This bachelor thesis examines the role of the coating in Otto Knille´s paintings using the example of two painted marble panels from the second half of the 19th century. Through the phenome-nological examination and the results of a material analysis, the materiality and production method of the coating could be determined. Furthermore, damage processes were determined and assessed. It was also possible to place the coating in the context of the painting technology of the 19th century and to classify it with regard to the method of production. Notes and essays written by the artist provided further insights into his inspiration and individual approach, which helped to understand Otto Knille´s working methods. The results of this work provide a basis for the development of a conservation concept.
