Susanne Conrad: The silver mummy mask from Hildesheim: deciding against a cleaning treatment Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: A silver mummy mask dating from the first millennium BC is investigated for conservation. After a discussion of all possible cleaning treatments, the author decided against removal of the silver chloride concretions from the mask's surface. The materials used in former conservations had to be removed, because they have caused further corrosion. The fragments of the mummy mask were fixed with glass fiber tissue and Paraloid B-48 N, and a new mount of polyethylene foam sheets was made to stabilize the mask physically. The appendix documents the remains of a gold coating, blue pigment, and organic material, and gives the metal analyses.
