Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Cracks on the lacquered surface.
Abstract: Urushi objects are produced in Japan since 6000 years. Archaeological discoveries, which give a reference for this, are damaged by the long storage in the ground. Changing in volume, cracks and deterioration of the wood as well as cracking of the lacquerlayer and loss of adhesion of the wooden base are the most common damages. This paper deals with the material urushi, the ancient and traditional technique of manifacturing lacquerware, the producing of cross- and thinsection of the layers and its analysis by microscope, with the conservation methods of waterlogged urushi by using PEG, mannitol or higher alcohols and the restoration of the excavated lacquerware.
