Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The lime based vault-paintings of St.Maries Church in Herzberg are almost still in their medieval state. This investigation is looking for the materials and the structure of the paint layer with all it’s damages that are caused by gypsum. Gypsum was developed out of the lime of the wall-painting’s surface. Because of many different ways of gypsum-crystallization, the paint layer lost adhesion and has to be consolidated. Different materials for consolidation are discussed and tested. Much information was delivered by transmitted light microscopy and REM. Further ways of conservation of the wall-paintings are discussed and a continuos monitoring-program is proposed.
