Overview:

Abstract: The priorities of the thesis lie on examining the manufacturing technology of the medieval floor made of clay tiles and ornamental gypsum, which is unique in Germany, as well as on the preparation of a substitute mortar on the basis of gypsum for the restoration of the floor. Different chemical-mineralogical and physical-mechanical examinations are carried out on the historic material, particularly on the gypsum screed. Based on the results, the attempt is made to prepare a new gypsum-based mortar to replace the cement joints from the 19th century. The formulation of the mortar is divided into two series of tests, in which the specific characteristics of the different mixtures are determined. The results of the technological examination are shown in the reconstruction of a section of the floor. Finally, aspects of conservation are discussed along with proposals for the further use of the medieval floor.
