Overview:

Abstract: This thesis submitted for a diploma deals with the engine hall and the basement of the Central of Massarelos in Porto/Portugal (built 1915). The unique technical and historical engines providing the power supply for the electrical tramcars are going to be preserved and in future will be part of an exhibition of the local tramcar museum. (Museu do Carro Eléctrico – MCE) This thesis deals with the history of the Central, the working of the electric-plants and their registration. It also tries to give a general description of historical background of the Central and the condition of the plants. Part of this paper focuses on the problems of hazardous wastes and their handling such as asbestos, PCB and mercury. The conceptual part tries to generate a master plan for the realisation of the preservation. This plan includes basic information on organising the restoring and problems that could occur with the handling of hazardous wastes. To give further information on the restoring and preserving one machine and several parts of it are chosen as an example to show some main work steps.
