Overview:

Abstract: This thesis aims to illuminate the connection between the structural aspect, the surface characteristics and the perceptional aspect of photographs on silver gelatin paper. How far these results are able to influence the integrating processes - like filling losses and retouching - in restoration cycles, is discussed and shown while restoring four presented photographs from the first half of 20th Century. A research project with various microscopical methods presents a section of the fascinating wide range of photographs`surface characteristics in form of an ‚Atlas of photographs` surfaces’. The visualized and described results could be used for identifying and dating silver gelatin prints by reference.
