Abstract: The problem of flaky wax seals has been known for centuries. This paper provides a survey on possible causes for the changing of the wax structure and the solutions for consolidation used in the course of conservation history. The specific properties of a beeswax-emulsion which is still often used in conservation is examined in experiments. The so-called "Wöllfert`sche Lösung" is compared with alternative materials for consolidation, which have not been used in seal conservation hitherto, but which have been successfully applied in the treatment of other wax objects. Based in the examination results a concept for the treatment of two wax seals with flaky structure has been developed and carried through.
