Overview:
Abstract: This Diploma Thesis introduces a group of works by the contemporary German painter and sculptor Heinz Mack. Starting with the technological and conservational aspects the author focuses solely on the paintings on textile backgrounds made in 1957-1963, which Mack called “Dynamic Structures”. Typical cracks in some of these paintings gave rise to a more detailed analysis regarding the causes of these damages. The artist once made a detailed statement regarding the conservation and restoration in an interview, including comments regarding the techniques used in his paintings. These aspects are being documented and analyzed in detail, using comparable objects and an examination of the materials. One of his paintings from this period is being used as an example for the development and execution of a treatment concept. Finally, the author discusses several alternatives regarding passive prevention measures involved in the presentation, storage and transport.
