Overview:

Abstract: The so called traditional "Viennese style of retouching" originated by Josef Hajsinek was further developed and modified by his successors, in particular Hubert Dietrich. This manner of retouching is taught and practiced at the University of applied arts in Vienna to this day. The development of this method is presented from its beginning to the presesnt day and changes, as well as the improvements to the method, such as the use of more stable materials, are investigated. With the conservation and restoration of a Baroque painting Still-life with flowers and a rabbit by Franz Werner von Tamm as a case study, the traditional "Viennese style of retouching" method is demonstrated step by step.
