Overview:

Abstract: The „magnetic spaceship“ (museum kunst palast, Düsseldorf, germany) by the Belgian artist Panamarenko (b. 1940 Antwerp) was built in 1980 as a model for a bigger sculpture. The topic of the work is a UFO, floating above a sandy landscape held by the force of an electro magnetic field. The landscape is made from polyurethane (PUR-) expanded foam, which over time has aged to various shades of brown. Investigations of the fragmentary object and comparison to similar objects by the artist helped to formulate the proposed conservation and restoration measures. The first practical steps towards the conservation and restoration of this rigid foam have been taken.
