Abstract: This dissertation deals with the conservation and restoration of a
roman glass vessel with chain handle from Krefeld-Gellep. The description
includes a discussion about the production process, the analysis of the
archaeological context and the documentation of the condition. After presenting
the methods of restoration and conservation, practical analysis are made
concerning the cleaning and the joining. The main part of this dissertation is the
examination of the stabilising methods. Looking for alternative ways of
stabilisation to the usual gap-filling, the different ways of stabilising are tested
on samples to find out whether the method is at the same time appropriate to
stabilise and not to harm the aesthetically impression of the glass. Finally the
most suitable method for the glass vessel is chosen and described in the
documentation of the applied methods.
