Overview:

Abstract: The sculpted altarpiece of the Catholic parish church of St. Jakobi in Coesfeld was manufactured around 1520 in Antwerp, the capital of art during that time. The original wings, which once belonged to the altarpiece, were lost at an unknown time and completed at the end of the 19th century by Theodor Stracke, a sculptor from Bocholt.
This thesis concentrates on the study of the open altarpiece showing 17 scenes adorned with sculptures. The main emphasis lies on the technical examination of the construction of the box and wings and also on the characteristics of the work and paint techniques of woodcarvings. The history of the Antwerp altarpiece, which was rather vague, was studied in detail and then evaluated together with the results of the examination regarding the originality of the altarpiece and its later cahnges. In addition to these examinations several observations of the Antwerp workshop and its working methods were made.
Afterwards, general damage of the wood and polychrome painting was pointed out and the causes were analysed. A finally conservatin concept in order to preserve the original substance was developed. The thesis ends with suggestions for preventive measures and further examinations.
