Overview:

Abstract: The significance of the object highlights through an examination of its intricate design concept as well as object analysis based on written historical records. The origin of the object in early 18th century Augsburg was confirmed by comparing it with four Augsburg cabinets from the Royal Collection of Rosenborg in Copenhagen.
The analysis of the state of the object brings to the fore the difficulties of material combinations, especially the lacking adhesion between fine silver foils and the wooden structure.
The treatment concept focuses on conservation whilst proposing minimal restoration measures. All materials featured in the cabinet with integrated clock were considered to achieve a uniform appearance of the object.
Trials on a test surface demonstrated effectively the feasibility of the proposed measures.
