Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis deals with the working methods of the artist Nikolaus Lang. Focal theme is Lang’s use of coloured earths (ochres), which can be found throughout his ouevre in varied expressions. Therefore the formation of ochres in natural deposits is of importance. This aspect is investigated from a geological point of view and the attempt of a summary of colouring substances in such earths given. In Lang’s work particularly red ochres often relate to the culture of the Australian Aboriginees. Due to that the potentially symbolic significance is addressed. Conversations with the artist and examinations of selected pieces of his work gave insight into aspects, such as conception, application techniques and materials as well as presentation and transport. Examination reports about eleven of Lang’s pieces exemplary summarise the extracted information. Additionally five different techniques of applying coloured earths are introduced.Langs attitude towards the aging process and change of his work is represented in examples and tied into the discussion about transience or permanence in contemporary art.
