Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The aim of the thesis is to make a written source accessible by providing a transcription and a glossary, to trace its origin and subsequent influence and to try to replicate some of the recipes.
The first part of this thesis deals with the written sources of "Augsburger Kunstbuechlin?s?. Comparison with older manuscripts and publications on alchemy and art science permits tracing the history of its recipes, and comparison with the later publications permits tracing their dissemination as well as their influence in art and crafts in later decades. Different editions are compared and a list of all the available copies of the various editions of "Augsburger Kunstbuechlin? stating where they are located is given.
The second part presents a transcription of the entire text of the first edition of the 1535 "Augsburger Kunstbuechlin?.
A glossary explains terminology and antiquated terms. Indeed 16th century literature is used to try to clarify the terms in their authentic context.
The third part provides a chronological, transcribed table of contents of the printed predecessors of the "Augsburger Kunstbuechlin?. Identical recipes or corresponding recipes are marked and all deviations are retained in transcription, making older publications fully accessible.
Finally, the fourth part of the thesis describes attempts to replicate the recipes for dyeing wood, bone and horn and the feasibility of these recipes. The results should give an impression of the actual coloring of Renaissance crafts.
