Overview:

Abstract: The re-restoration of a Baroque oil painting on canvas provides information about an old technique of relining paintings using paste and glue, now no longer in use. The use of this technique was the decisive factor in the unusual damage to the panel: partial severe loss of bond to the paint layers in the area of the stretcher edges. Technological examinations and scientific analyses revealed the effects of the earliest restoration attempts on the picture’s structure. The paste-and-glue relining technique is described in the context of the history of canvas painting conservation. A practical reconstruction of this method was undertaken with the aid of early documentation and comparative examples.
