Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This thesis deals with the conservation and restoration of an Italian polychrome cartapesta relief of the Holy Mary, mounted on a poplar panel (16th century). The object displays serious losses and damage to the cartapesta support, loosening of the paint layers and surface dirt as well as losses to the wooden support. The conservation action included Holzstäbchenergänzung, consolidation of the paint, fixation of the supporting textile with a Japanese wheat starch glue, completion of the cartapesta support with a fibre suspension and the filling and retouching of paint losses. The theoretical section discusses papier maché and the history of its application. Historical recipes for its preparation are researched and samples are prepared. The conservation difficulities of papier maché objects are shown through four selected examples. A small catalogue presents paper maché objects that were found and viewed in the course of this study.
