Torsten Lange: The restauration of a „Kinobox B“ with particular respect to the present asbestos problematic Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The subject matter of this dissertation is the investigation and conservation of a silent movie projector. At the start we gave our attention to the history, significance and functioning of the „Kinobox B“. Our special interest, of course, was the servere damage of device.
Several of the materials corroded due to the influence of humidity and climatic change. Especially the case’s stability suffered, and compound materials and constructional links were dissolved in various degrees. The leather-upholstered wood case was enorrmously damaged by woodworms, so that meassures for consolidation and supplementing were inevitable. In response to the high inflammabilty of cellulose nitrate films the case’s inside was coated with an asbestos cardboard layer. The severe damages of this layer had to be examined. After further extensive investigations and systematic tests there could be found safe methods for soaking and coating of wood and asbestos. The dissertation may convey an idea of my practical experience. It may serve as a basis for further research.
