Katja Matauschek: Laponite RD for the removal of animal glue residues from the original canvas Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The practical part of this diploma includes the accomplishment and documentation of the conservation
and restoration of the painting. Its high quality was hidden behind very disturbing surface effects.
Numerous deformations of the canvas, due to a failed relining and former conservation methods were
the main damage symptoms. A combination of Klucel MF- and especially Laponite RD-gel enabled the
removal of the lining and its sticky residues. After a treatment of the canvas deformations, a varnish reduction was carried out. Tears (166 cm) and a hole (72 cm²) had been closed by a modified thread-bythread method with polyamide and an inlay.
The theoretical part presents the physical and chemical properties of Laponite RD. Systematic case studies, analysis and conclusions in means of the treatment of the reverse are explained.
