Sandra Plötz: Adhesive for bonding tears in threads impregnated by wax Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This work reports on the conservation of a 17th century painting ''still life with couple'' by a Flemish artist. The initial condition of the painting was characterised by many tears (total length 300 cm) and large deformations. The main difficulities existing were the insufficient adhesion between paint layer and support due to the flood disaster (2002) and the wax facing from 1975, respectively. After the reduction of the beeswax from the backsite of the painting the tears and holes were closed by thread-by-thread
tear mending. With respect to the theoretical part of this thesis a suitable adhesive for bonding threads impregnated by wax was found. By introducing an adhesive solution into the painting (from backsite) the paint layer could be consolidated. After this the facing was removed.
