Overview:

Abstract: The theme of this paper is the wall paintings in the so-called “Badestube” in the Castle of
Neuburg/Donau. The secco-paintings are extensively covered by various later coatings. Architectural
paintings and figurative portrayals can be seen in the open areas.
Part 1 contains a study and conceptualisation of the restoration. Part 2 of the thesis investigates in depth the main problem areas involving conservation: More recent tension filled oil and lime paintings are causing damage to the wall paintings and futhermore pose an aesthtic problem.
For this reason the possibility of removing the more recent layers, causing as little loss as possible, is currently being tested and evaluated on a sample area.
