Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis is concerned with the wooden paneling in the workroom of Prince Albrecht of Prussia, which is put into its cultural context as a late classicism interior from 1854. A special emphasis is on the role played by the descendants of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
The thesis provides a documentation of a technological examination of the paneling, which is then used as the foundation for the concept for treatment that is developed subsequently. Both parts focus on a reddish brown semi-transparent coating that was applied on the surface in 1947/48 according to the investigation. Besides the historical surface finishing, this layer is identified by means of a detailed technological analysis. A thorough discussion of how to treat the reddish brown coating is followed by a description of practical experiments concerning the feasibility of separating this layer using soaps, solvent gels, and laser beams. The results indicate that, if a future conservation and restoration of the workroom should aim at reconstructing the original appearance, applying solvent gel is the most promising approach
