Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis will examine a pair of commodes dated around 1745/50 with respect to conservation and restoration efforts. These commodes belong to the State Art Collection and are kept at the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Arts and Crafts Museum) in Dresden in the Pillnitz palace.
By using the pair of commodes and other comparable pieces as an example, the French influence on the make and artistic design of commodes in the Dresden region of the 18th. century will be illustrated.
The technical examinations to follow will focus on the identification of the materials used, a closer study of the construction, the production techniques and an analysis of surface treatments undergone to date. A main emphasis will always be the comparative observation of both commodes.
Examining the present condition of these commodes will provide insight into their current state of preservation and will allow conclusions to be drawn with respect to their background and process of development. Based on these examinations a conservation and restoration concept will be determined.
In conclusion the restoration and conservation measures will be carried out on one commode and documented accordingly.
